Beauty and the Geek
Beautiful Joe (Widescreen) Oscar nominee Sharon Stone (1995 Best Actress, "Casino") heads an all-star cast in this dark and comic film about a gambling con girl who meets her match in an Irish-American florist (Billy Connolly) with nothing to lose - except his heart. After a series of life-altering personal revelations, Joe (Connolly) leaves New York and hits the road in search of adventure. In Louisville, Kentucky, he meets Hush (Stone), a sexy ex-stripper turned con girl, who is in major debt to local crime boss George the Geek (Ian Holm). When Joe tries to intervene on her behalf, he winds up in trouble, too. With the Geek's henchman Gil Bellows (TV's "Ally McBeal") hot on their trail, Hush and Joe pack up and head to Las Vegas, where Hush manages to steal not only Joe's money but his heart as well. "Beautiful Joe" is an extraordinary film about ordinary people who take the biggest risks of their lives and win against all odds.
Geek Love by Katherine Dunn, Geek Love is the story of the Binewskis, a carny family whose mater- and paterfamilias set out-with the help of amphetamine, arsenic, and radioisotopes-to breed their own exhibit of human oddities. There's Arturo the Aquaboy, who has flippers for limbs and a megalomaniac ambition worthy of Genghis Khan . . . Iphy and Elly, the lissome Siamese twins . . . albino hunchback Oly, and the outwardly normal Chick, whose mysterious gifts make him the family's most precious-and dangerous-asset. As the Binewskis take their act across the backwaters of the U.S., inspiring fanatical devotion and murderous revulsion; as its members conduct their own Machiavellian version of sibling rivalry," Geek Love throws its sulfurous light on our notions of the freakish and the normal, the beautiful and the ugly, the holy and the obscene. Family values will never be the same.
